Methods of Secondary School Mathematics and Statistics Teaching
Description
This course is designed for preservice secondary or middle school
mathematics
or statistics teachers, so that they may apply research-based teaching
strategies and
techniques that lead students to discover, create, appreciate, and
utilize mathematics that is personally meaningful to them in their own
real worlds. Students taking this course will develop their talents for
teaching in accordance with the
Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (PSSM)
published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), so
that as instructors they will motivate their students to eagerly
construct mathematical concepts for themselves, discover mathematical
relationships, develop and maintain algorithmic skills, and communicate
in the language of mathematics to devise solutions to real-life problems.
A significant portion of the course is field-based so that students have
the opportunity to develop their teaching strategies and practices
through direct interaction with students and teachers at Mount Logan
Middle School and Logan High School. During this course, students will
build a working portfolio to use in their profession as mathematics
teachers.
