Collaborative Lesson Planning

USU students enrolled in Methods for Teaching Secondary Mathematics (MATH 4500) and teachers at Mount Logan Middle School and Logan High School work together at designing, delivering, and revising lessons for their classes informed by research-based teaching practices. For eight weeks each semester these pre-service and in-service teachers work in teams, in the schools with real students -- building up a library of lessons designed to meet the needs of their particular students.

Journal Club and Group Meeting

Schedule Fall 09

The purpose of the Journal Club is to introduce participants to Mathematics and Statistics Education research by providing an opportunity to read, present, and discuss some noteworthy papers in the field. For graduate students doing education work, participation in this group is essential. We offer stipends to teachers that attend, participate, and make presentations.

The purpose of Group Meeting is to informally share research and ideas related to the teaching and learning of mathematics and statistics in our department and beyond. This meeting is also intended for faculty, teachers, and students, with the focus on advancing our own research ideas and programs, not on the background educational literature.

Park City Mathematics Institute

The Park City Mathematics Institite is an outreach program of the Institute for Advanced Study and offers stimulating professional development in mathematics and mathematics education for mathematics educators and researchers at secondary and post-secondary levels. PCMI

Mission

Our professional learning community involves undergraduate pre-service teachers and mathematics majors, graduate students, mathematics and statistics education researchers, in-service secondary mathematics teachers from throughout Utah, and research mathematicians and statisticians. The goals of our learning community are
(i) to enhance public opinion and awareness about mathematics and statistics;
(ii) to enable direct collaboration among secondary mathematics teachers and education researchers;
(iii) to promote investigation and research in mathematics and statistics by in-service teachers relevant to topics they encounter in their secondary school teaching; and
(iv) to improve the quality of mathematics and statistics instruction by supporting the implementation of research based practices among new and experienced teachers.
