USU MATH & STAT CLUB

Next meeting is TUESDAY, April 17th at 3:30 pm in FL 206

The Math and Stat Club will be showing the film N is a Number: A Portrait of Paul Erdos.

Paul Erdos (said like "air-dish") is, so far, the most prolific mathematician (depending a little on how you count), but I have come to find out that many of us math nerds do not know who he was. Euler, Newton, Euclid, Pythagoras, and Leibniz are common names, but many of my students have said that they do not know of this mathematician who had no job or home, but over 500 co-authors, and over 1300 publications. He made contributions to combinatory, graph theory, number theory, classical analysis, approximation theory, set theory, and probability theory. Erdos numbers are part of the mathematical folklore; your Erdos number is 1 if you published a paper with Erdos, 2 if you publish a paper with someone who has published a paper with Erdos (assuming you have not published a paper with P.E.), and so on.

Check out the link below, part of the Erdos Number Project. The seventh B-coauthor is our own LeRoy Beasley.

Please come an enjoy this film with us. Refreshments will be served. Thank you for your interest in Math and Statistics.
