Teaching Assistantships (TAs)
Graduate students with a TA teach one math or stat class per semester under the supervision of a faculty member and/or assist professors with teaching upper division and graduate classes. Graduate TAs earn a part time salary (equivalent to $19/hour for incoming Masters and $21/hour for incoming PhD students) twenty hours a week. This amounts to $13,500 for Masters and $15,000 for incoming PhD students for nine months, which comfortably covers living costs, tuition and fees at Utah State University (+ Tuition Waivers!). All qualified students receive assistantships.Research Assistantships (RAs)
Several faculty receive funding from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, US Department of Agriculture, the USGS Bioresources Division and other state and federal agencies to conduct research programs. Their grants often support graduate researchers (RAs) who assist with the project while completing their own thesis research. RAs are available for summer and all or part of the academic year, depending on the source of funding and supervisor. The department rounds out part-time RA support with teaching assistantships to give a year-round financial package.Out of State Tuition Waiver
All assistantships carry waivers for the nonresident portion of tuition. This means that RAs and TAs in the department of mathematics and statistics are exempted from the additional tuition costs charged to out-of-state students, a cash benefit of approximately $8,000/year.Resident Tuition Remission
All full-time doctoral students at Utah State receive in-state tuition remission for 70 credits of graduate coursework toward their degree (only 60 credits past an MS are required to complete a PhD). This amounts to a cash benefit of $3,500/year. Tuition remissions are available to Masters students in the department on a competitive basis for outstanding research and academic progress.Summer Support
Students continuing their studies over the summer receive support from a variety of sources, including:- Summer Teaching. Students are paid to teach USU summer classes at $3,000/class.
- Research Assistantships. Summer salary of $3-5,000 for working with a funded research professor.
- Internships. Students are able to apply for internships at state and national companies, earning a salary for their work.Internships are required in the Industrial/Interdisciplinary Masters Program, but available to all qualified students.
Graduate Scholarships and Fellowships
Graduate students may apply for Presidential, Vice President for Research and University Fellowships, which provide $12,000-$15,000 yearly stipends and waivers of tuition as per assistantships. Also available within the College of Science is the Eccles Fellowship, which provides three years of full-time support. These fellowships are competitive and may require a research proposal which can be written with the help of one of our research faculty, so interested students should contact the Director of the Graduate Program (grad@math.usu.edu) before January 1.National Funding agencies (NSF, NIH, DOE, DOD) also offer competitive fellowships, which provide complete support for graduate studies in mathematics and statistics. These must be applied for with help from faculty researchers at Utah State. Contact the Graduate Director before November 15 for help in applying for these fellowships.
