  • linear algebra/matrices, eigenvalue/eigenvectors, determinant, rank (Math 2250, 2270)
  • analysis (introduction to formal proofs/analysis theory) (Math 4200)

Mathematics Major:

  • algebraic structures; (Math 4310)
  • analysis/advanced calculus; (Math 5210, 5220)
  • complex variables; (Math 5270)
  • topology; (Math 5510)
  • algebraic theory; (Math 5310, 5340)
  • partial differential equations (Math 5410, 5420)

Statistics Major:

  • theory of probability and statistics; (Stat 3000, Math 5710, 5720)
  • linear regression/time series (Stat 5100)
  • experiment design (Stat 5200)
  • one or more of sampling, categorical analysis, multivariate analysis, bioinformatics, spatial statistics (Stat 5120, 5410, 5570, 5600)

Mathematics Education Major (including Composite Math/Stat Education):

  • algebraic structures; (Math 4310)
  • probability (Math 5710)
  • history of mathematics (Math 4400)
  • methods for secondary school teaching of mathematics and/or statistics (Math 4500, 5500)
  • in-service teaching experiences (Sced 5630)

Other Majors and Emphases (e.g. Actuarial Option, Applied Math Option, etc.):

  • replace general competencies in traditional areas (i.e., algebra, topology, analysis) by specific topics related to the specialized option, with examples as follows:
  • or Actuarial Option: 2 semesters of actuarial mathematics (Math 5570, 5580)
  • or Computational Mathematics: ability to write computer code to solve linear, non-linear, stochastic and (partial and ordinary) differential equations (Math 5610, 5620, 5640, 5460).
