Introduction

As part of the follow-through for an NSF-FIPSE program we are trying to incorporate more mathematically oriented problem solving into the Biology curriculum. This year's Ornithology group has the good fortune to try out the migration problem that has been used in past Ornithology classes. The basic scenario is as follows. Note the assessment questions at the start and end of the project will not be used in determining grades for the course. Dr. Sullivan and the TA, Julie Rieder will present two lectures on flight and migration and Dr. Jim Powell will present a lecture on the mathematics of flight on January 17 to provide the background information for this exercise. In addition Dr. Sullivan will be showing an excellent video on Flight. Time will be available in lab on January 22 for groups to work on the problem. Dr. Powell will be available for this lab. On January 24 each group will present their results, describe how they obtained the results and what they learned along the way and we will discuss the exercise. Keep in mind that this exercise is under continual development and we appreciate any constructive suggestions on how to improve it. Students will also answer assessment questions on January 24 (which will again not count toward their grade).
